Cuff titles History

Cuff titles could serve some different purposes. Cuff titles worn as commemorative or traditions insignia, or identify the wearer as part of an elite unit. Cuff titles also used as career/role insignia. Some cuff titles were awarded to soldiers taking part in certain campaign, making them the same of a campaign medal. Cuff titles more accurately known as sleeve bands.

cuff title (German: Ärmelstreifen) is a type of insignia worn on the sleeve, cuff titles seen in German military and paramilitary uniforms, most normally seen in the Second World War and first word war but also seen postwar.

Cuff titles are in general associated with units of the Waffen SS but were far and wide used by other branches of the German military, including civilian organizations  and paramilitar. The Großdeutschland Infantry Regiment (later Großdeutschland Division) was also famous for their use of cuff titles.

The Deutsches Afrikakorps was well-known for its cuff title, which were the origins of future campaign cuff titles,"Afrikakorps": Also famous as the DAK, the this cuff title was worn by troops serving in North Africa under Rommel. worn out on the right sleeve."Feldgendarmarie": For military police. worn out on the left sleeve."Kriegsberichter des Heeres": Army war correspondents. worn out on the left sleeve.

Cuff titles were mostly worn on the right sleeve, however, there were many exceptions to this rule.

In the SS, the cuff title was worn out on the left arm. All campaign cuff titles were wear on the left arm. An SS soldier who fought in Crete as a paratrooper and later on joined 2nd SS Division Das Reich would have both of his cuff titles on the left arm.
